- 84% were happy in their chosen fields.
- 78% wanted networking with others in their same fields.
- 57% experienced some kind of barriers to advancement or with communication on the job.
- 71% were only ones in their field or specialty.
Deaf Women in Science and Engineering (DeafWiSE) was founded in 2001 to create a global organization of deaf professional women in engineering, mathematics, and science.
DeafWiSE provides support, networking opportunities, and friendship with like-minded women.
The objectives of DeafWiSE are to:
- Enhance career development and provide resources for deaf and hard-of-hearing women in science and engineering
- Promote networking with other deaf and hard-of-hearing women in science and engineering
- Encourage deaf and hard-of-hearing school-age girls and young women to enter the science and engineering fields; and
- Foster a sense of community and support for deaf and hard-of-hearing women in male-dominated fields.
